K-9 Grumman Recovers Stolen Gun

Explosives Detection K-9 Grumman

On October 6, 2014, La Crosse Police Department Investigators were investigating the report of a stolen 9mm handgun.  Investigators obtained information on the possible location of the stolen handgun, and Investigator Ron Secord responded to the area with K-9 Grumman.

K-9 Grumman, a 7-year-old yellow lab, is one of the Department’s four K-9s, and the only explosives detection canine.  This means that K-9 Grumman is trained to detect explosives, explosive residue, and post-blast evidence, as well as firearms and ammunition hidden out in the open, in containers and vehicles, or buried underground.

Investigator Secord and K-9 Grumman searched the area where the handgun was suspected to be hidden.  K-9 Grumman alerted to a jacket which was stashed under a trailer.  Upon searching the jacket, officers located the stolen 9mm handgun.  The incident involved a juvenile suspect, and an arrest was made in the case.

In 2008, the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives provided the La Crosse Police Department with K-9 Grumman and training for his handler, at no cost to the City of La Crosse.  Investigator Secord and Grumman continue to receive training and annual certification from the ATF and the North American Police Working Dog Association.  In the past, they have served in various protection and detection roles for dignitaries such as the Dali Lama, Presidential and Vice-Presidential candidates visiting La Crosse, and they assisted in protecting Airforce 2, the President’s back-up plane, in 2013.
