On today’s date at around 10am, officers responded to a call in the 2100 block of Green Bay Street for a wanted subject. Prior to officers arriving on scene, the suspect left on foot, and it was reported he was armed with a knife. Officers began searching the area for the suspect, and due to the close proximity of Longfellow Middle School, our Officers requested that Longfellow and Central High School be placed on an external lockdown while our Officers searched the neighborhood for the suspect. Both schools were placed on an external lock down at about 11:00am. The lockdown was later extended to Spence Elementary School as a safety precaution until the suspect could be located.
At 11:26am we received information that the suspect had returned to the Green Bay Street residence. Officers returned to this residence and took the suspect into custody. The lockdown was then cancelled at the schools.
There were no threats, nor did this incident relate to any activities at the area schools. The La Crosse Police, along with School Resource Officers, school staff, and administration are trained to respond to situations such as these. The external school lockdowns were a precautionary safety measure as our officers searched the area for a wanted subject reported to be armed with a knife who was trying to avoid apprehension by Police.
