On May 28th at 3:10 p.m. the La Crosse Police responded to robbery call at the Altra Federal Credit Union inside of the Festival Foods at 30 Copeland Avenue.
The suspect was a white male who walked into Altra Federal Credit Union and handed a deposit slip to the teller which had writing on it which stated “STAY CALM, GIVE ME YOUR MONEY AND NO ONE GETS HURT”. The teller complied with this demand turning over $862.00. The suspect exited, walking out to the parking lot and getting into the passenger side of a vehicle which then left the scene. There was no display of a weapon during this incident and no one was injured.
La Crosse Police obtained security video containing images of both the getaway vehicle and the suspect. Police were able to quickly locate the suspect vehicle and the getaway driver; ultimately leading to Rodney S. Simmons (08-25-1974) of Illinois being charged with party to the crime of robbery and possession of counterfeit money.
Due to Mr. Simmon’s initial reluctance to cooperate and provide information, La Crosse Police asked for the public’s help in identifying the suspect by releasing the surveillance image on May 29th. Information began pouring in from confidential police contacts and the general public. Police rapidly developed information that the suspect of the robbery was Shane B. Sherburn (12-01-1978) of La Crosse. On May 30th at 3:13 p.m. while investigators were writing a search warrant for Shane Sherburn’s residence, officers watching the residence observed Sherburn leaving in a vehicle. At 3:15 p.m. officers stopped the car being operated by Sherburn and immediately took him into custody.
Sherburn was transported to the La Crosse Police Department where he eventually confessed to committing the robbery. A search warrant was executed at Sherburn’s residence (947 Green Bay St.) where police located the clothing seen in the initial security footage. At this time police have not recovered any of the money that was reported stolen.
When executing the search warrant at Sherburn’s residence, investigators arrived at the house to find 3 children (a 10 year old, a 7 year old and a 10 month old) left unattended. The investigators reported the residence to be in filth and squalor with an estimated 300+ empty syringes strewn throughout. Police located Shane’s wife Tenesha M. Sherburn (05-18-1980) and then returned her to the residence. She was taken into custody at 4:40 p.m. and charged with party to the crime of robbery and 3 counts of child neglect. The investigation revealed that Tenesha was aware of the crime and hid the clothing that Shane wore during the crime.
La Crosse County Child Protective Services responded to the scene and assisted with safe placement of the children. Also the City of La Crosse Inspection Department was notified of the condition of the residence. All 3 arrested individuals are scheduled for initial court appearances today at 1:30.
