Busy Weekend for La Crosse Police

This past weekend proved to be a busy one for La Crosse Police. Below are a couple of the incidents our Officers addressed.

On Friday, December 14th, 2018 at 9:27PM, Officers were dispatched to 3643 Mormon Coulee Road for a car versus pedestrian injury crash.

A Ford Taurus driven by Brianna Allen was northbound in the 3600 block of Mormon Coulee Road. At this time, the vehicle was in the northbound or left passing lane, adjacent to the center turn lane. A male subject was crossing Mormon Coulee Road eastbound, or coming from what appeared to be Woodlawn Cemetery and walking towards Ed’s Service Center. Video footage shows the male party was not crossing the highway at a point marked by a crosswalk.

As the Ford Taurus continued Northbound, the driver indicated that she didn’t see the pedestrian, and at this point, the vehicle struck the pedestrian. The pedestrian was transported to a local medical facility where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

At this time we are identifying the deceased male pedestrian as William J. Smutny (DOB 02-05-1947) of La Crosse.

This remains an active investigation as we continue to conduct follow up into what occurred.

On Saturday, December 15th, 2018 at approximately 11:19PM, Officers were dispatched to 2350 South Avenue for a shots fired complaint. Initial responding officers discovered several shots had been fired at this location and had struck the walls in a couple of separate apartments. Although the apartments were occupied at the time of the shooting, thankfully, nobody was injured.

During the course of the investigation, suspect and suspect vehicle information was developed.

On Sunday, December 16th, 2018 at approximately 2:36AM, Officers located the suspect vehicle, a 2013 Ford Focus, parked in a parking lot in the 900 Block of West Avenue South. Contact was attempted with the occupants; however, the driver, Sophie R. Yang, sped off and a pursuit ensued. Officers pursued the vehicle to the 900 Block of Farnam Street where the occupants fled on foot. Officers were able to locate all of the occupants and take them into custody. During a subsequent search of the vehicle, Officers located two handguns, one of which was reported stolen, suspected methamphetamine, and marijuana.
