CPA: Week 4

“Police.  Stop.  TASER!  TASER!”

What an exciting class at last week’s Citizens’ Police Academy!

We started with a Defense and Arrest Tactics (DAAT) presentation from 3rd Shift Commander Lieutenant Dan Kloss. With help from Lt. Troy Nedegaard, they taught us the proper way to escort an arrested subject; how to use pressure points for pain compliance; and defense tactics for a combative subject.  Lt. Kloss and Lt. Nedegaard also demonstrated decentralization techniques.

During the second part of the evening, Officer Jeremy Rindfleisch presented information on Conducted Electrical Weapons (CEWs), commonly referred to by the name brand TASER.  Officer Rindfleisch reviewed how CEWs operate, situations where they are used, and CEW safety.  When he asked if anyone was willing to get “TASED”, six hands shot into the air!

After suffering the five-second CEW shock, one volunteer offered, “The first three seconds were bad; the last two seemed to take a year!”

Stay tuned for a recap of tomorrow’s class.  We will be learning about investigations and firearms.
