Halloween Safety

The La Crosse Police Department would like to ensure that everyone experiences a safe and enjoyable Halloween.  In the City of La Crosse, “Meet ‘n Treat” occurs on Halloween, October 31st.

Parents, review the following tips with your children:

  • Limit the hours of “Meet ‘n Treat” to between 4:00PM and 8:00PM
  • Only approach homes with outdoor lights turned on
  • Ensure young children are accompanied by a parent or other responsible person throughout the evening
  • Take all treats home to be examined before eating anything – throw away any item that isn’t wrapped or packaged by the original manufacturer
  • Wear light-colored clothing that has reflective tape on the sides, front, and back
  • Ensure costumes are short enough to prevent tripping and that they are weather appropriate
  • Stay within neighborhoods and visit homes you know
  • Watch for traffic – even though you can see them, they may not see you
  • Carry a flashlight
  • Stay away from pets as they may become scared and react to costumed people

Residents and motorists, review the following tips:

  • Turn on your outdoor lights as a signal that you’re giving out treats
  • Only provide manufacturer-wrapped or packaged treats
  • Drivers should be constantly vigilant for persons in the road

Let’s all work together for a fun and safe night.  Happy Halloween!
