As school winds down and summer begins, it’s the perfect time of year to bring out bicycles, skateboards, and roller blades and ride around town. In the City of La Crosse, there are regulations for riding these, especially in the Downtown Business District.
In general, play vehicles (skateboards, roller skates, etc.) are allowed on all residential city sidewalks but not on sidewalks in the Downtown Business District, unless the operator is under 12 years of age. Those using play vehicles must always yield to pedestrians and cannot interfere with pedestrian traffic on sidewalks.
Those using in-line skates, or roller blades, follow the same rules as play vehicles. They are also allowed to utilize city streets, except those that are also State or US Highways.
Bicyclists are allowed on all city streets, highways, bike trails, and residential city sidewalks. Bikes are not allowed on sidewalks in the Downtown Business District, unless the operator is under 12 years of age. Bicyclists must use caution when passing a pedestrian and must obey the same traffic laws as motorists when riding on the street.
For all persons using these types of equipment at night, there must be a red reflector or blinking red light visible to the rear and a white light visible to the front at 500 feet. As always, it is recommended that persons using this equipment wear a helmet and other proper protection.
