The Wisconsin Bureau of Transportation has declared this week, January 11 – 15, as Wisconsin Adult School Crossing Guard Recognition Week. January is a perfect time of the year to recognize the dedicated adult crossing guards in our community, considering the job they have and the often less-than-ideal elements in which they work. The winter months can be unforgiving, yet adult crossing guards throughout La Crosse faithfully attend their stations to ensure the safe crossing of hundreds of our school children. In addition, the guards play an important role in facilitating a safe route to and from the schools our children attend.
The La Crosse Police Department currently has nine adult crossing guards. If you are driving near a school, slow down, pay attention, and obey the guards! Failure to stop for an adult crossing guard jeopardizes the safety of our children and the crossing guard.
Also, please “STOP” and show your appreciation!
This recognition event was developed through a collaborative partnership of agencies and organizations including Wisconsin School Safety Coordinators Association, Wisconsin Traffic Safety Officers Association, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, Wisconsin Department of Transportation, Traffic & Parking Control Company, Inc., Wisconsin Driver & Traffic Safety Education Association, AAA Wisconsin, Wisconsin Highway Safety Coordinator’s Association, and several local police departments.
