On April 9th, 2017 at 05:22AM Officers from the La Crosse Police Department were dispatched to the 300 Block of South 22nd Street for an entry in progress complaint. Officers were advised that a resident in the area had just woken up, and while looking out toward his garage, he observed two flashlights flickering inside the garage.
The complainant said he went outside to confront the burglars, at which time they ran off. The complainant was able to witness the individuals get into a red vehicle and leave the area. He was able to read the license plate number on the car and told dispatch what direction the car left.
Several Officers responded to the area and were able to locate the suspect vehicle in the 2100 Block of Winnebago Street. Shortly after locating the vehicle, Officers were able to locate the two occupants, Matthew Smith and Joshua Doering. Both suspects were brought to the La Crosse Police Department, where they confessed to multiple garage entries in La Crosse.
Based on information received from the suspects, a search warrant for their residence at 1236 Winnebago Street was obtained. Upon searching their residence and storage shed, Officers located a large amount of stolen property, ranging from tools, power tools and bicycles. Four truckloads and a van were needed to transport the stolen items to the LCPD for processing.
The La Crosse Police Department would ask that anyone who has reported their garage burglarized to contact Investigator Phil Martin (608-789-7212) to set up a time to view the property. If you have been the victim of a recent garage entry and have not yet reported it, we would ask that you utilize the Online Reporting module.
It is believed that both Smith and Doering are involved in multiple burglaries in La Crosse.
This is also a reminder to all homeowners and apartment residents to make sure to lock and secure all doors and windows to homes, apartments, garages, and vehicles.
Charges on Smith and Doering are as follows:

Matthew Smith DOB 05/31/1992
