The weekends are usually busy for the La Crosse Police; however, the number of incidents involving guns is alarming. This Saturday night, La Crosse Police had a string of calls involving guns. The first was at 9:24 pm, an attempted armed robbery outside of Vick’s Bar at 3749 Mormon Coulee Rd where a suspect pointed a hand gun at the victim demanding money. Then we took a theft complaint at 9:28 pm where an individual had a hand gun stolen from their vehicle that was parked at Vick’s Bar. Then at 11:34 pm we responded to Subway at 3810 Mormon Coulee Rd for a report of a male individual shot in the shoulder. La Crosse Police were able to link all these incidents together to determine that Mackey Drake (DOB 11-07-2000) had broken into the vehicle, stole the hand gun, attempted to rob the individual at Vick’s Bar, then went to 3072 23rd St South where another juvenile accidental shot the suspect in the theft and robbery – Mackey Drake (karma). Mackey’s injuries were non-life threatening and he is currently held at the La Crosse County Jail for armed robbery and theft.

Additionally, on Sunday morning at 4:12 am, La Crosse Police responded to the area of 8th and Ferry St. for multiple reports of gun fire. Police searched the area and were unable to locate any thing.

What is alarming to the La Crosse Police is the upward trend in gun calls in general. The chart attached compares January 1st through November 13th of the last 7 years for “Gun Calls” – that is the blue line. The red line shows how many of the gun calls resulted in a police report being filed, ultimately meaning there was validity to the initial complaint. This shows a 157% increase when comparing 2017 to 2010!
