La Crosse Police have taken a couple reports on another telephone scam. This one targets customers of Xcel Energy. We have received two reports from people who have received calls from someone purporting to be with the utility, stating that their account is past due and that if they don’t pay up immediately through Green Dot or Vanilla prepaid cards, their power will be shut off. It’s another attempt by scammers to gain access to personal information. Anyone getting such a call should simply hang up. If you do have a question regarding your bill, you should call Xcel Energy direct at the number listed on your utility bill.
