At 12:18 am on August 5th the La Crosse Police responded to the area of 3rd and Main St for a report of a shooting. Initial reports from witnesses indicated that a disturbance among several people started in the mid-block of 100 South 3rd. The people involved began walking north on 3rd St. and shots were fired when the group was in the area of Main St. Officers responded to the scene and began investigating the incident. At 12:37 am it was reported to dispatch that two individuals had just came into Gundersen Lutheran hospital with gunshot wounds. Both of these individuals were treated and released.
The investigation proceeded quickly with police identifying a suspect and a potential suspect vehicle. At approximately 2:00 am La Crosse Officers located the potential suspect vehicle. Based on the investigation, officers were able to identify the shooting suspect who was inside of the vehicle and take him into custody without incident.
Isaiah P. Stenson Jr. DOB 03/09/1994 of La Crosse was taken into custody and referred on charges of:
- 1st Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety
- Resisting or Obstructing an Officer
- Disorderly Conduct
- Felony Theft
- La Crosse Municipal Warrant
- Possession of THC
The downtown Safe-Cam system played vital role in this investigation. Through the use of the Safe-Cam video, the La Crosse Police were able confirm what information from witnesses was accurate and credible. The video provided police with very specific details of the suspected shooter and ultimately the confidence that they were arresting the right person when they located Isaiah Stenson. Additionally, having multiple camera views provided clarity of who was involved in the incident and the vehicle that Stenson fled in after the shooting.
